It belongs to the class of Szeto-Schiller peptides, designed to target the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM). Unlike general antioxidants, SS-31 accumulates selectively within the mitochondria, making it a precise tool for investigating mitochondrial bioenergetics and oxidative stress at the source.
The primary mechanism of action involves high-affinity binding to cardiolipin, a phospholipid exclusive to the inner mitochondrial membrane. By interacting with cardiolipin, SS-31 stabilizes mitochondrial cristae structure and optimizes the electron transport chain (ETC). Research indicates this interaction prevents the conversion of cytochrome c into a peroxidase, thereby reducing the production of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) while preserving ATP synthesis efficiency.
